Vietnamese airlines approved for 1,270 additional domestic flights during Tet

Vietnam’s aviation watchdog has approved several proposals from local airlines to increase flight frequency to meet spiking demands during the upcoming Tet holiday, though only half the requested additions were approved.

Local airlines, national flag carrier Vietnam Airlines and budget airlines Vietjet and Jetstar, sought permission to collectively add 2,486 flights, with only 1,270 of the proposed flights actually gaining approval from the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam (CAAV).

In a report submitted to the Ministry of Transport on Thursday, the CAAV said the three would be allowed to run the additional domestic flights between January 16 and February 12, an 8.5 percent increase in flights typically running during the period.

Vietnam Airlines is permitted to add 380 flights, totaling 76,758 seats, during the Tet season, while Vietjet and Jetstar will add 560 flights (100,800 seats) and 330 flights (59,400 seats), respectively.

Approximately 1,067 of the approved extra flights will depart or land in Tan Son Nhat International Airport, the country’s busiest airdrome, already operating beyond its design capacity.

Despite potential overload issues, during the Tet holidays the Ho Chi Minh City-based airport will serve 807 flights per day during peak time, a 7.7 percent increase from the usual schedule.

Vietnam Airlines is the only of the three carriers happy with the CAAV decision, with nearly 100 percent of their extra flight plan approved, meanwhile Vietjet will only be able to offer half of its proposed additional services while Jetstar was approved for 30 percent of its requests.

Under the CAAV decision, the three carriers will collectively be forced to cut 230,000 seats from their previously planned Tet services.

With some airlines allegedly selling tickets for the extra flights before having obtained approval from the CAAV, passengers with booked tickets are sitting on hot bricks, fearing they will not be able to return home for Tet celebrations.

Ho Quoc Cuong, head of aviation transportation under the CAAV, said the air carriers may not sell tickets for all of the planned extra services, so there is little chance passengers with purchased tickets will miss flights.

“If it is really the case, carriers must compensate and take full responsibility for the passengers,” he said.

Canadian man jailed for stealing laptops at Saigon hotels

He was caught in his second theft attempt in August last year.

A court in Ho Chi Minh City on Thursday sentenced a Canadian man to nine months in jail after he was caught stealing laptops at local hotels twice.

Jeffrey Arthur McGinnis, 33 and an IT professional, went to a hotel in District 1 in late August, sneaked into its staff room and took two laptops, according to the indictment.

Several days later, he went to another hotel also in the district and stole a laptop from a guest's luggage.

This time his act was caught on camera and he was arrested the following night.

He said he had sold the first two laptops for VND7 million ($309).

McGinnis said he needed money because his business went south.

In Vietnam theft suspects will face criminal charges if the stolen items are valued above VND2 million.

Vietnamese optimistic about economic prospects in 2017: survey

A survey of 700 respondents from Vietnam’s two largest cities, Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, revealed that 59 percent are optimistic about the 2017 economic outlook, 12 percent are pessimistic and the rest believe it will remain unchanged.

Net optimism (the gap between optimism and pessimism) stood at 47 percent, significantly higher than neighboring countries like Thailand (9 percent), Indonesia (17 percent) and the Philippines (38 percent).

This year, Vietnam has set a goal of 6.7 percent GDP growth, higher than the 6.21 percent reached in 2016.

Many Vietnamese economists say that the goal is in sight thanks to institutional reforms and improvements to the export and foreign investment sectors.

However, the country also faces challenges such as slow growth in a number of key sectors and high lending interest rates.

The World Bank and the Asia Development Bank have forecast that Vietnam’s GDP growth will hit 6.3 percent this year, while the International Monetary Fund predicts it will rise by 6.2 percent.

Indonesia arrests 8 Vietnamese women in prostitution crackdown: report

Officials said the women entered Indonesia as tourists but then worked illegally as sex workers.

Indonesian authorities have arrested 10 women suspected of doing sex work illegally for several weeks in Batam City, Riau Islands.

Eight of the 10 suspects are Vietnamese while the other two are Chinese. They are between 20 and 30 years old, according to Jakarta Post.

Batam Immigration Office Chief Teguh Prayitno was quoted as saying that the arrests were made in two separate raids on a boarding house and a club on Wednesday.

“They entered Batam via Jakarta. They have been operating in Batam for several weeks, accepting orders for sexual services by phone,” the official said.

He said the suspects claimed that they were tourists but could not show proof of tourist accommodations. “They will all be deported back to their countries,” he added.

Many young women from other countries are working as sex workers in Batam, according to the immigration office.

Sex work is illegal in both Indonesia and Vietnam.

Vietnam’s longest sea bridge to open to traffic this May

After three years of construction, the $530-million bridge in the port city of Hai Phong is almost ready to serve locals and tourists.

The northern port city of Hai Phong is set to open the country’s longest cross-sea bridge in May.

The Tan Vu-Lach Huyen Bridge is 4.9 kilometers long, linking Cat Hai Island and the city’s eastern port Dinh Vu.

The bridge, which is 16 meters wide with six lanes, costs nearly VND12 trillion ($530 million) to build.

The immense structure is supported by nearly a hundred concrete pillars.

The city authorities said the bridge was completed on Friday and would be opened to traffic in May, giving locals and tourists another option apart from waterway transport.

It took three years to build the bridge. The Vietnamese government secured funds from the Japan International Cooperation Agency for the project.

Singapore flight diverted to Vietnam due to burning smell incident

A faulty fan in the Tigerair plane's ventilation system is believed to be the cause.

A flight of Singapore-based carrier Tigerair from Taiwan to Singapore has been diverted to Ho Chi Minh City after a faulty ventilation fan reportedly caused burning smell in the cabin.

Flight TR2993, with 163 passengers on board, took off from Taipei at 1:55 p.m. on Friday and was scheduled to land in Singapore at 6:55 p.m., The Straits Times reported on Saturday.

The plane, however, had to land in Tan Son Nhat International Airport at 4.48 p.m. No injuries were reported.

Tigerair, officially known as Tiger Airways, said in a statement on Saturday that the diversion was "due to a burning smell in the cabin which was traced to a faulty fan in the aircraft's ventilation system after checks," according to the report. It has already been serviced and is being brought back to Singapore.

A replacement flight will carry the passengers to Singapore on Saturday afternoon.

Passenger Chua Heng Tiong, 54, told The Straits Times he was quite scared as the plane shook a lot at one point.

In June last year, a domestic flight with 177 passengers and seven crew members from Hanoi to the Mekong Delta city of Can Tho had to land in HCMC after the cockpit glass was cracked.

Tan Son Nhat International invests in expansion to counter congestion

Saigon City – Tan Son Nhat International Airport is adding a runway, two terminals and extra aircraft aprons in an upgrade designed to let Vietnam’s busiest hub handle 40 million to 50 million passengers annually.

The government gave the green light for the expansion after the Defense Ministry agreed to clear some of its operations out of the airport, as well as from Noi Bai and Danang international airports, according to the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam.

Tan Son Nhat initially will add the runway and aprons to raise its annual capacity to 38 million passengers by 2019.

A public controversy surrounded 21 hectares taken over for flight training by the military after the Vietnam War ended in 1975. And 157 hectares were used for a golf course by a military-linked company in 2005.

Land clearance has begun for the planned Long Thanh International Airport, some 50km from Ho Chi Minh City, but this larger aviation hub will not be operational until 2025. The military therefore has faced pressure from academics and others to relinquish its land at Tan Son Nhat for civil use.

Tan Son Nhat is expected to serve over 2.5 million passengers between Jan. 20 and Feb. 10, Vietnam’s Lunar New Year period. The airport handles some 800 flights with 123,000 passengers daily during this peak holiday time.

Rapid growth in air travel as well as the number of airlines in recent years has stressed the country’s aviation infrastructure. Tan Son Nhat serves 40% of all fliers in Vietnam, and is particularly vulnerable to flooding and congested approach roads. The aviation authority said more than 15.8% of flights in the first half of 2016 were delayed. The overloaded facility handled 32 million passengers in 2016, a 28% increase, surpassing its design capacity of 20 million.

Complementing the urgent airport upgrade, Ho Chi Minh City is embarking on 80 projects costing a total of $1.7 billion to alleviate traffic congestion. Six of these relate to airport access. Other anti-congestion plans include roadside traffic density displays, messaging systems and adjusted working hours.
