It does make me wonder - why is hfj a sunset industry? I could only make some guesses...

1. Customers who are willing to dump the huge amount of money just to "feel good" are becoming more rare, perhaps due to the financial turmoil.

2. Customers of the age ground who go to hfjs (like me) are getting, well, older. The younger set prefers to go to ktvs or hcs/brothels.

3. Singers work much harder than ktv girls. Why work so hard when you might as well work at a ktv?

Any other guesses? I am based in Shanghai, so it may be different in Singapore.

Here's my input on pt3

hfj is one way they can work legally in sg. This should be different from Shanghai.

so legal means rules and regulation. The rule is to clock in 7 days a week lol hence they HAVE to hard work

anyway that singer was lucky this time as she told me that customer had paid up

Actually, it is the same. Singers at hfjs have employment passes issued by the Cultural Bureau (or at least their employers are supposed to get for them). "Remunerated Accompanying" 有偿陪侍 is illegal in China, according to 《关于开展加强娱乐服务场所管理严厉打击卖淫嫖娼赌博吸毒贩毒等社会丑恶现象专项行动的意见》 and 《营业性歌舞娱乐场所管理办法》(you have to read both documents together to understand why it is illegal).

But, of course, just because something is illegal in China (like pirated goods) does not mean it doesn't happen. The problem with China is not its legal system, but its legal enforcement system.

When you have been in China for 6 years, and go drinking and partying with businessmen and officials, you get to know the country quite a bit...

One of those nites after leaving office past 10pm but don't feel like going home. Needed a drink badly..... drove aimlessly and ended up at Jade. It's been a while since I've been active in flower joints. Thought nobody will recognise me anymore.

Step into jade.... 1st word from the waitress who atteneded to me was...."LONG TIME NO SEE AH!!!" huh..... where have I met this waitress before. Turn out she was a fromer nite hong kong waitress a year ago while I was still active there..... oh well so much for remaining low profile. Before I knew.... one singer sneak up from behind...... 阿文哥，是你吗？Turn out to be an ex Hunag Chao singer who was a close friend to my Singer GF back in 2008. Small world again...... back then I already fancy her. Tiertiary graduate with some sophitication. Can play 琵琶, got class type. are we fated to meet again??? huh huh

Anyway, didn't throw any big flowers... just $200 buck which was already the 2nd biggest flower for the night. Looks like Jade biz also not too good.

Half way through ppc, one chick slid her hand along my arm... WTF!!!??? took a closer look... wah lau eh... my regualr KTV girl in 2006. She's now a comestic sales girl... but pop into Jade to see a friend.

Goodness..... I long time never go night joint... step in only see so many familiar faces!!!! :confused:

The HFJ bosses and singers are still living in the 1970s. Now is 2010.
Look at their opening hours. They got it all wrong.
Some HFJs only open late and singers start to sing and entertain at 10pm.
The HFJs expect guests to stay till 3am.
Guests who stay till 3am may arrive home at 4am.
Not everyone is a super rich tycoon who does not need to work.
Not everyone is an illegal bookie who has never worked in his whole life.
Not everyone is a gangster who uses HFJ to launder $.
Not everyone wants to burn their whole next day trying to recover sleep from tonight's excesses.

Nowadays big timers find it more exciting to throw money in the two casinos.
Why bother to throw in HFJs.

The HFJs do not know how to catch the "after work" masses.
People leave office at 7pm. No HFJ is open. So they go to the pubs.
Silly HFJs miss out on all these customers.
Some who are married need to go pub early and be home by 10pm.

90% of the HFJ singers really cannot sing. And they know it too.
It can be suffering to hear some of them.
