Mourinho: Red changed game

Real Madrid boss Jose Mourinho admitted Nani's red card swung the UEFA Champions League clash with Manchester United firmly in their favour.

The Spanish side booked their place in the quarter-finals of the competition on a controversial night at Old Trafford as their 10-man hosts could not hold onto the lead given to them by Sergio Ramos' own goal.

Luka Modric and Cristiano Ronaldo struck in quick succession for the visitors to claim a 3-2 aggregate victory after Nani was dismissed by Turkish referee Cuneyt Cakir for a high challenge on Alvaro Arbeloa, although the winger's eyes were on the ball and not the man.

Mourinho told Sky Sports: "Manchester United were playing very well. They were very compact, they were very aggressive, very well organised technically and the match was very difficult for us.

"I doubt with 11 against 11 we could win the match.

"I had a feeling that Modric would change the match because he brought to the game some qualities that we did not have on the pitch at the time.

"I am a bit frustrated because we played so well against Barcelona and today I was waiting for more. I know they (Manchester United) are giants, not just physically but mentally. I know they are fantastic and have a manager capable of organising and motivating people.

"But I was waiting for us to come here and play in a different way."

Former Chelsea boss Mourinho again insisted he would be happy to return to the Premier League in the future, with his tenure in Madrid tipped to come to an end in the summer.

He added: "Everyone knows I love it, and everybody knows one day I will be back, that's for sure, unless nobody wants me! But if somebody wants me one day I have to be back because I enjoy it so much."

That was never a red card, Nani had eyes on the ball and he can only be cautioned for dangerous play. :mad:

nani's eyes were on the ball and then arbeloa came crashing into him. a red card? wtf?

but having said that, i thought united would have regrouped after the sending off by taking off wellbeck or cleverley and maybe giggs too and replacing them with the fresh legs of rooney and smalling.

with us out of the champs league, i just hope that we will power on to winning the double of the premier league title and the FA cup.

Why, oh why did the old man leave out his wonder boy for the start of the Real match when Rooney has been scoring goal after goal b4 n after the match wif Real???...becoming senile is he ??.. tink he deserves the loss to Real Madrid to exit the European Cup...tats sad :(

Now only the double is left for him n the Red Devils...n hopefully they dun lose the FA Cup to their most bitter rival, Chelsea in the replay...so sad to see them giv a 2 goal lead away n let Chelsea fight back...they could hv lost instead had it not been for their hero, David De Gea, whom the old man oso wanted to get rid of...like tat how to win doubles n trebles, always wanting to get rid of his best players for reasons best known to himself n ego...self inflicted injury i shd say the least...n a very bad example n childish behaviour for a great manager like him to not want to shake hands wif Benitez, the Chelsea boss b4 the start of the match...no sympathies for him, but not the RED DEVILS, if he shd finally lose all the 4 cups on offer each season...Lolz

i read somewhere that united were discussing and trying to work out a deal with current shirt sponsor nike to help bring our CR7 back.

Hurray !!...its gonna be the 20th EPL title for United !! :)...Rooney beating Reading 1-0 last nite...n the blue neighbours losing 2-0 to Everton another blue team...

But yet to beat another blue team, Chelsea in the FA Cup Re-play...tats not gonna be easy though, they are no pushovers...it is not gonna be a stroll in the park for the Red Devils...but hope they win it...

Vidic: No repeat of collapse

Nemanja Vidic insists Manchester United will not let lightning strike twice as they close on regaining the Premier League title.

United still have some tricky hurdles to navigate before they reach the winning line.

At the end of Cheltenham week, keen racing enthusiast Sir Alex Ferguson embraced the theory that a testing run-in can catch even the most likely winners out.

It would take a collapse even more shocking than Devon Loch in the 1956 Grand National to deprive United of a record 20th title now though.

Fifteen points clear with nine games left, the Red Devils could have the job completed by the middle of next month, with their own 18-point record winning margin in the Premier League era also in their sights.

There should be no collapse like 12 months ago, when they tossed away an eight-point advantage in the space of four games.

But Vidic is still preaching caution.

"It is a big gap and we shouldn't let that change," said Vidic.

"We have the title in our hands.

"What happened last season is the reason why sometimes you can feel the fans get nervous.

"But I don't think we should allow that to happen again. We can't allow that to happen again.

"But we still have some tough away games at places that are traditionally hard for us so nothing is finished yet."

It is true that Manchester City, Arsenal and Chelsea represent a third of their remaining fixtures.

But Aston Villa and Swansea must go to Old Trafford too, which should account for almost half of the 13 points now required after Wayne Rooney's 16th goal of the season wrapped up a 1-0 win against Reading on Saturday evening.

And the memory of that journey back from Sunderland last season, after City's late heroics had snatched away a prize they finished their final game believing was going to be theirs is likely to ensure no loss of focus.

"You don't get any points for that," said Ferguson, when asked if United would be counting their chickens.

Defender Chris Smalling was more measured in his response.

"Last season is a massive incentive to make sure we hold on to this lead," he said.

"We can't rest on our laurels. We have to make sure we finish it well before the season is over."

The sense is of a side not merely content with reclaiming their crown. It appears United want to do so in the most comprehensive manner possible in order to emphasise their superiority.

In his team selection on Saturday, Ferguson was even taking into account the state his players would return from their various international commitments in, knowing trips to Sunderland and Chelsea - in the FA Cup quarter-final replay - come in a 48-hour spell upon their return.

It probably explains why Ferguson was so cautious on Friday when he addressed the England call-up for Rio Ferdinand.

The defender has now been cleared to accept Roy Hodgson's invitation to report for duty at St George's Park on Monday.

Ferdinand will do so after another impressive performance, in which he claimed the assist for Rooney's first-half goal, yet more evidence of the thoroughness of his preparation, even if stand-in Royals boss Eamonn Dolan wishes the 34-year-old was not quite so diligent.

"It makes me sick," he said.

"I am inspired by people like Rio Ferdinand, not just the way he performs but how he has led his life.

"He wants to make a difference and does a lot of charity work.

"He is a legend. I wish he hadn't done all that medical work and his back was a little bit strained because perhaps he might not have played.

"Ferdinand, Vidic, Rooney, Van Persie. Wow. What a spine of a team.

"They are the greatest football club in the world, led by the greatest manager of all time."

Valencia admission over form

Manchester United winger Antonio Valencia has admitted his form this season has been disappointing.

The 27-year-old picked up the Player of the Year award at Old Trafford last season but has failed to recreate that form in the current campaign, scoring just once in the Premier League.

The Ecuador international has acknowledged his performances have taken a dip but claims injuries have not helped his cause.

"It's not been quite the season I would have hoped on a personal front," said Valencia, quoted in the Daily Mirror.

"The injuries I've had have held me back a bit. I still get the odd twinge from the last injury I had to my leg and that perhaps affected my progress slightly."

Valencia joined United from Wigan Athletic in the summer of 2009 in a deal reported to be worth in the region of £16million.
