Thai PM Thaksin open to concessions, ready to postpone snap polls
BANGKOK : Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra said snap April elections could be postponed and indicated he was willing to meet his chief opposition rival in a bid to end spiralling political uncertainty.

His announcement followed assurances from senior military commanders that the armed forces would not stage a coup as pressure mounted on Thaksin to resign.

"Whatever date the election will be held is up to the Election Commission," Thaksin told reporters.

"If the political parties do not want to participate in the election and the date is the condition, I am willing to cooperate," he said in an apparent concession to his opponents.

The parliamentary opposition on Monday rejected the early poll called by Thaksin, following a day of intense consultations during which the premier and his rivals had appeared to be nearing a compromise on constitutional reforms.

The opposition announcement threw Thailand deeper into political uncertainty following weeks of protests and demands that Thaksin quit over corruption allegations.

No delay: EC says election set for April 2

The head of Thailand's Election Commission reaffirmed on Wednesday that the election date set for April 2 will not be postponed as there is no reason to delay the poll.

In an effort to break a political deadlock after the main opposition parties --the Democrat, Chart Thai and Mahachon parties -- announced an unprecedented election boycott, caretaker Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra on Tuesday suggested that it was possible the April 2 general election could be postponed if the Election Commission agrees to do so.

Despite calls from some key members in the ruling Thai Rak Thai party to delay the poll, Election Committee chairman Wassana Phermlarp, chairman of the Election Commission, said the EC concluded that the election will be held on the given date as there is no justifiable reason to delay the poll.

Meanwhile, EC secretary-general Ekkachai Varunprapa did not rule out the possibility that the poll could be postponed before the candidacy registration process begins. The EC, he said, has to date not received any formal request seeking postponement.

Registration of party-list candidates is scheduled for Thursday and Friday at the National Stadium in Bangkok.

Constituency candidates contesting in Bangkok and other provinces must report for registration between March 4-8.

Advance voting will be held on March 25 and 26. Overseas voters will be allowed to cast ballots during March 17-26.
