Most people just takes the bus as it's a lot less hassle and most likely faster.
Via shekou, you'd need to first get down there which will take at least an hour either by private car (expensive and subject to delays/traffic jams), or a bit cheaper by train to lowu and subway to shekou - at least 100 minutes to do this. Then you gotta give say 45 minutes leeway/immigration clearance etc and to make sure u make the departure, and then another hour or so on the ferry.
And you can either take the bus to gongbei/zhuhai, or all the way to Macau.
If u're in Shenzhen already, then the ferry can make sense, but if you're in Chang Ping, I'd definitely suggest just going on the bus.
