I've been to Bangkok during Songkran and the whole town was empty! My friends told me that a lot of Thais go back home for this festival, but this was a few years back and am not sure if still the case or not. But Thais are IMHO a stickler for festivals etc.
Anyway, congratulations again - and enjoy yourself wherever you end up going to!
