Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has welcomed the arrival of his first grandson, born in Solo, Central Java on Thursday, Cabinet Secretary Pramono Anung confirmed.
Jolowi’s daughter-in-law Selvi Ananda, wife of his eldest son Gibran Rakabuming, gave birth to a son in Solo, Jokowi’s hometown, at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday.
“Please pray that he will be a pious son and respectful to his parents. May he be granted with health and happiness,” Pramono said in a text message to journalists.
Gibran and Selvi married on June 11, 2015. Gibran lives in Solo where he runs a catering and wedding business.
Jokowi is scheduled to leave for Solo this afternoon after they have attended the inauguration of a logistics center in Cakung, North Jakarta.
Jokowi smiled but gave no comment when journalists asked about his grandson.
President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo visited his newborn grandson, Jan Ethes Srinarendra, in Surakarta, Central Java, on Thursday.
The President and First Lady Iriana arrived at 9 p.m. and went directly to PKU Muhammadiyah Hospital to visit their first grandchild and daughter-in-law Selvi Ananda, who was recovering after giving birth earlier in the day.
"Thank God I've become a grandfather," said Jokowi after meeting his grandson, as quoted by a statement.
Jan, the son of Jokowi's eldest child, Gibran Rakabuming, was born on Thursday morning.
Gibran explained in a press conference the meaning of the child’s given names, Jan meaning “most”, while Ethes “dexterous” and Srinarendra “intelligent leader”. When asked who named the newborn, "The father himself," said Gibran.
Gibran, who runs several martabak eateries called Markobar, expressed his thanks to the community for their prayers, as well as the team of doctors who delivered the baby.
“The birthing process went smoothly. Thank you so much to PKU Muhammadiyah’s team of doctors,” said Gibran.
On the sidelines of the press conference, Gibran did not forget to promote his new business, Pasta Buntel, located near the same hospital where his son was born.
"Pasta Buntel is pasta covered in a banana leaf and grilled on charcoal. It’s an innovative culinary dish," Gibran told journalists.
