The Synopsis
“Sully,” opening Friday, is inspired by gripping reality. Directed by Clint Eastwood and starring Tom Hanks, the film is built around the January 2009 emergency landing of US Airways Flight 1549 on the Hudson River. It was a memorable moment for many New Yorkers.
The flight out of La Guardia Airport lasted less than six minutes. The “bird strike” that disabled both engines of the Airbus A320 allowed only 208 seconds—3 minutes and 28 seconds—for pilot Chesley B. “Sully” Sullenberger (Mr. Hanks) to react. The rescue of the 150 passengers and five crew members was under way within minutes.
