The express bus goes directly from the border post just as you exit the Macau side of the Immigration building (to the left). You can see it parked there and there are one of two people who work for the company there. If you pay in chinese currency, they will collect all of 30 yuans from you. From the airport to the border, it's 25 Macau dollars or 28 yuans as far as I remember. Time - about 25 minutes.
I believe that you took the AP1 bus which is from the underground area and that one goes right round the city before it gets you to the airport. It's cheap but takes an hour alright.
