the post generated a few responses, would like to add to the points mentioned.
on police
-the police is the only party that can ask to see your ID. no other party/authority i know of exist such that you are "forced" to obliged.
-the police can only request for your ID AFTER identifying themselves as police officers.
-at this point you can still refuse to show ID. Of which they can ask you to go down to the station with them without cuffs or if u somehow get violent or physical, in cuffs.
-you don't have to show your chat log to the police (they can get it out in their labs) besides your wife. If you want peace when she request of it.
on hotel security
-they have the right to ask you to leave. you have the right not to.
-they certainly don't have rights to ask for your ID as someone else pointed out before. (see point above that i stated). You chose to give as you are misinformed/scared/feeling cooperative.
-if you don't leave and have not cause harm, intent to cause harm, suspected to have caused harm to anyone, they have the right to inform authorities (police) to question you.
-if you don't leave and had, intend to, proved to have caused harm to others previously on the grounds, they can "arrest you" using force, until the authorities arrive.
-when they ask you questions, no matter he is security or not, you don't need to reveal hotel guest details, its in their policies. If this security guy is faking it and the person inside the room is your gf, you potentially can indirectly put your gf in danger as a name can do wonders in the hands of a skilled criminal. You could reveal hotel room number, this signify you actually got the correct room in the correct hotel. (as different hotels have different room naming conventions), but again if the guy is a fake, you risk your family/gf safety.
will be glad anyone who know better can add on so we bonkers don't get jelly fish legs when questioned just by anybody.
