My first choice is Grand Business Inn at Soi 11, next is Majestic Suites near Soi 4. Proximity of both hotels to Soi Cowboy, Nana Plaza and Edens Club is close enough so you can walk!
But if your friend never been to Bangkok, I would suggest Nana Hotel because its directly across from Nana Plaza. Also lots of action at the parking lot after 10:00 pm!

I had stay in Grand Business Inn before. Not bad. But if I choose to stay along the Sukhumvit Road, and dun need those facilities e.g. swimming pool that can be find in the hotel, I will recommend 3 hotels:
1. Everich Inn (btw Sukhumvit Soi 5 and 7)
2. Majestic Suites (Sukhumvit Soi 4 - the nearest to Nana Plaza)
Had been staying in Everich Inn for the past 2 visits, and had been satisified with them. The room rate is either 1300B or 1400B. Choose the 1400B room, as for about S$5, you get windows, and bigger room.
Just my recommendation. As FYI, I really condemn Fortuna Hotel at Soi 5 as they overcharge me the last time, and for showing me the atitude. Luckily, I had discove Everich Inn.
