Hotels which customers are mainly Singaporean or other foreigners generally have pay "kopi money " to police, so no need to worry about being harassed by police. Cheap hotels may not pay enough "kopi money ", so better avoid. I don't go to Indonesia during Fasting Month , not because of fearing police harassment. I 'm more worry about various Islamic Groups who tend to be active during Fasting Month, these people may not be able to settle with "kopi money ". Also during Fasting Month, people there trying hard to find money for Hari Raya , they will find trouble for financial gain. My friend was force to pay RP1 million ( that was $200 at that time) to police when he was caught for smoking cigarette in street while he was in Balai. Fasting Month still many months away from now, so for the time being, just enjoy first.
