Commercial sex with someone under 18 is now a crime
SINGAPORE: Commercial sex with someone under 18 is now a crime under the law.

This and other changes have been made following a comprehensive review of Singapore's Penal Code.

It is the first massive review of the criminal laws and penalties in Singapore since 1984.

The changes will allow the authorities to better protect vulnerable persons as victims of crime.

The Home Affairs Ministry tabled the amendments in Parliament on Monday.

As society changes with time, the Home Affairs Ministry said, the legal system too needs to reflect current realities.

This means the laws need to stay ahead of criminals and the nature of crime.

Before the Penal Code's changes were finalised, an extensive public consultation was undertaken to engage professional bodies like the Law Society, social groups and interested individuals.

Feedback was obtained through various channels, including focus group discussion with people from all walks of life.

The Home Affairs Ministry said that every piece of feedback was carefully evaluated.
