Are you sure she said auntie and not 'ate' (sometimes used to refer to female person not that much older, pronounced ah-teh)? I remember the first time I heard it I thought it sounded like auntie.
The conversation went something like this...
"So who do you live with?"
"I live with my ate."
"Your auntie?"
"No, no. my ate."
"Yes auntie, your father/mother's sister!"
"No, no, ate, not auntie!"
