九寨沟 in oct is a bit cold, but there is a five day period in Oct when 九寨沟 is at it best.
Instead joining a tour group or taking the shuttle bus provided by 九寨沟 which is a bit of rush; you should hook up with a 藏族 resident of 九寨沟 and tour 九寨沟 in your own private car with a licensed 藏族 resident guide.
Recommended hotel is Sheraton of course.
3day 2night is more than sufficient. You can fly direct to 九寨沟九黄机场 from chengdu.
