Not to dangerous .. your friend may have hidden the fact that he decided do venture on his own with some 'curiosity kill the cat' attitude.
I been almost everywhere, except Basilan, and Cotabato, I never felt scared- and the only times I felt scared was some slum area, where I should not be in the first place - I decided to 'check out the place' and half a dozen people started to follow me .. I just stepped into the nearest mall and had enough after that.
Be safe - you can be safe anywhere if you know your limits - and you can get killed if you pick fights with the natives.
A lot of time when foreigners get killed in Manila area people forget to tell the rest of the story - that the fellow had a fight with his girl friend and the complications ...
Same for Angeles - 9 out of 10 hits / beat ups is because of guys showing off their girl or trying to show who is bigger than who ..
I remember an American I met in Lucky plaza, who said he has been shot three times in OLangapo - I casually said that doesn't mean anything as the shooter didn't know where to place the right tap .. That is the kind of people who invite trouble.
