If this is your very first time, you should not be travelling alone. First you may not be so confident, second, language will obviously be a problem and thirdly Bangkok can be quite intimidating for a first timer.
For this first trip, I suggest you stay in the Sukhumvit area, where it's nice and bright and filled with people. (Somewhere between Soi 2 and Soi 19) There are reasonably priced hotels (from 800baht all the way to 3500baht++)
As you are going to chiong
, go to a beer bar/ gogo bar ( Soi Cowboy/ Nana Plaza/ Gullivers/ Beer Garden/Thermae )browse around, chat up the girl you like, and NEGOTIATE. This is important. You don't want to end up paying her 500baht and she demanding 4000baht. Current rate is 1000 to 1500ST and 2500 tp 3500 LT. Other than the f**k payment you still have to pay abt 500 to 600 baht to the bar.
