Gang fights becoming obsession in schools

VietNamNet Bridge – Repeated cases of school violence cases which occurred in recent days have raised doubts that the measures taken by the Ministry of Education and Training (MOET) and general schools to fight school violence are useless.
Measures still cannot help
Deputy Minister of Education and Training Tran Quang Quy said MOET has been applying comprehensive measures in an effort to stop school violence. He said local authorities, organizations, students and students’ families need to cooperate with each other to stop the evil.
The ministry has asked schools to have clear behaviors towards the fight cases. Schools must criticize the fighting and impose heavy fines on violent behaviors. They have also been told to tightly control the learning time of students at schools and apply drastic measures to prevent students from giving up lessons. A big problem now is that though students tell their parents that they go to school, they actually skip class and participate in join fights.
MOET has also called on schools to renovate the method of teaching citizen morality to students. The lessons about morality need to become more lively and attractive, so as to help strengthen the education of morality and life skills to students.
In HCM City, in April 2010, the city’s education and training department organized a seminar on combating school violence. At the seminar, Huynh Cong Minh, Director of the education and training department, admitted that though school violence has been existing for a long time, recently the number of cases and the seriousness of the cases have sharply increased.
Nguyen Khac Huy, Head of the Students’ Affair Division of the HCM City Education and Training Department, said that a lot of lessons have been learned from the seminar. Teachers need to take more care of students, provide analyses on the bad consequences of school violence, and regularly give advice to students on their problems. Educators have especially realized that a close cooperation between schools and relevant agencies, especially the police, is very important in preventing school violence.
With a lot of measures put forward and implemented, educators once felt secure that the school violence will be restrained. However, in reality, more and more school violence cases have still been occurring, which has sparked doubts about the effectiveness of the measures applied by the educators.
Civil affair committees have been set up for every class of Mach Kiem Hung Secondary School in HCM City. A branch of the Youth Union also exists in every class. The school has an open letter-box, to which every student can send letters and provide information about school violence cases. There is also a consultancy room managed by some key teachers of the school.
However, a case of school violence still occurred recently in the school. A group of female students beat another student in a class with the participation of many other students. The problem was that even the class monitor was also involved in the fight and the school did not know about the case until the clips of the fight were posted on Internet.
Phan Dinh Long, Headmaster of Mach Kiem Hung school, admitted that there is a trend of “taking off shirts and filming” at the school, and the serious thing is that students do not think they behaviours are very bad.
Students afraid of revenge
When asked why students do not provide information about fights to schools and relevant agencies, many students honestly said that they are afraid of revenge. Long admitted that the case shows the failure of the school in preventing school violence.
Nguyen Huu Khanh, Headmaster of Le Thi Hong Gam High School in HCM City, said though the school has taken drastic measures to restrain school violence, cases still occur sometimes. Students fight because they still have not realized the danger of their behaviors.
Ho Thi Ngoc Vuong from Nguyen Trung Truc High School, said that the current curriculum is too heavy in theory, while there are not many useful lessons on life skills and behavior, both important factors that help develop the personality of students.
Meanwhile, many people believe that the current fines on violations are still not heavy enough to deter students. Especially, they have also pointed out that it is the “achievement disease” (schools only want to report their achievements while trying to hide problems) which has made the school violence become more serious. The Lam Dong province’s police said that many schools refuse to provide the list of bad students, so that the police can take a close watch over them.
