Translation:
play mantis (螳螂) the predator, stalking and catching cicada (蝉) - a kind of insect
黄雀在后
Translation: yellow canary (黄雀) the predator, is stalking right behind the mantis (and preying on the mantis)
and while the mantis got to feast on the cicada, the yellow canary
was right behind and eat the mantis.
In the modern variation that I just described, the yellow canary is really after the cicada (think of it like a butterflying singer lor.) and the petrol-pumping mantis is only but a pawn in the end game.
