It is not safe at all time. If possible, try to walk in a group. Last time I tried walked alone from BZL to Jin Lang hotel at nite, always felt uneasy whenever I walked past groups of suspicious looking guys loitering on the street. Maybe, I looked poor, nothing happen to me that time. However, I got a frd with his gal walking outside near Shangyuan hotel in broad daylight around noon time, then out of nowhere 2 guys riding motorbike tried to snatch the gal's handbag. After that incident, I rather pay 10-15 rmb for cab even for a short ride.
In another incident, after visiting Chaperone for evil footie massage, I tried to walk from Chaperone to Miraton at around 1am++. When I walked along Zhongyuan Road, kena stopped by 2 Gong Ans. I was very worried that the 2 Gong Ans were fake, so I requested to see their passes. One of them just showed his pass for a split second, and I couldn't even take a look if it was real or not. They also rudely suspected that I was a drug addict and demanded a body search and even requested for my wallet. I LL handed over my wallet but prepared to fight them out if they tried to flee. Luckily, they were real Gong An, so after some questionings, they returned my wallet and let me off.
