Agoda is not always expensive. On some occasions they could be the cheapest. They run special deals/promo all the time depending on location and country that could be as much as 75% off.
Last time I was in ZH (few yrs back), the Agoda special promos were much cheaper even with the Agoda fees than any China booking sites, so always best to go to all the sites and compare before booking.
Also Agoda is great with Phuket, Thailand as I once booked (2 yrs ago) one of their promos for a moderate hotel right on the beach with swimming pool for only $28/nite with a simple continental breakfast each morning (and this included all the tax and fees). Left me plenty of drink money to spend at the bars
