Traveling time in fact GZ is shorter. 1.5-2hrs for both private or public. HK private vehicle is 1000rmb at least. For Huatong, if you are lucky, 2hrs you can reach Huihua. If you are unlucky, vehicle detour to 2-3 stops, custom long que, can take as long as 3-3.5hrs.
Usually when you take Huatong they will advise you to cater at least 4hrs from the time you board the vehicle to your flight departure timing. There was once, I left at 4.15pm for my 8.25pm flight at HKIA. Got stuck at the custom for 1hr cos one of the passenger have some issue at the clearance, apparently there is a torn page in his passport and they have to investigate. I reached HKIA at 7.40pm. Lucky I did not have any check in baggage and they allow me to check in, but i have to run all the way to the boarding gate. From then onwards, I try not to go or return CP via HK. Furthermore, custom clearance at HKIA always take super long due to the high influx, no such issue with GZ most of the time.

totally agree with u .....
HKIA is not the best option due to the long buffer time and unknown circumstances that can cause u lots of inconveniences and missed ur flight ..
advantages going by HKIA is the many flight schedules ...
