Buy there cheaper .... why subject to possible tax or undertable money?

They will ask you to open up and let them inspect outside the custom before allowing you to check out .... so is hinting you to pay them undertable money ..

ESPECIALLY this period !

Once saw a tourist brought u an i-mac PC .. kena unpacked and check here and there ...

Re: Bringing electronic goods into vietnam for personal use

Electronics are priced around the same as Singapore now, price difference is seriously not much. Unless you are bringing a used TV into VN, or else buy there is better. I have this feeling that yr MIL came to your house, like yr TV and want to bring back to vn.

Thanks for the advice. I was thinking of having my wife bring it in - was told somewhere that they are allowed to bring in one electronic product per person but could not confirm it. I guess the custom will still create trouble & find excuse to collect money for tet.

Bro Singviet, thanks! Thinking that GST rebate & price diff will add up, but have to consider additional luggage charges & the hassle of carrying it through customs.

no, mil has not come yet. Hopefully there will not b another request when she's does visit.

Yes .. it's not only foreigner ....

Even they do this to the LOCALS coming back ....

When I and my wife went back for marriage ... to avoid asking why I bring in so many $$$ into VN, I passed it to my wife .... she put it in the Purse in her handbag .. likewise .. after screening , she was told to bring out her bag to see how much $$$ is in her purse ...

I once know this gal on the plane .. she was carrying another brand new iphone in the box and in her bag ... after screening, she was told specifically to take out only the iphone for checking and demand $$$ from her ....

This is the way they operate in VN. Each person is allowed to bring in/out US$7000, so you and your bx allowed to bring in US$14000, wah.... your wedding expensive leh. Its in their culture that giving `coffee money' to get things done.

I brought a new 32" LCD TV back sometime in June this year...

Kena stopped and ask me show them receipt...Cos my understanding is that any goods above US$400 in value will be subject to tax...My receipt showed SGD$499.

So actually its just about just make it...He insist that I have to pay tax so after some discussion in vietnamese he still dun give way. Then kena special..." either u pay now or tomorrow then you come back to main office to settle the official tax and procedure."

Suck thumb...so gave him SGD$30 he look at the notes and like doing some mental calculation then shake his head....then i gave him $50 wave in the air and ask "duoc ko?" he kena stunned....quickly pull my hand down ask me to put on the table..then ask me go...

knn...wanna eat money like scared his colleagues know and must share...

Anyway, moral of story is....save the trouble..you work out, you can claim 7% GST refund but then when you reach there you give about the same amount back to the corrupt officers...not to mention youhave to carry it all the way from sing to there....nt worth the effort la..

yes you are right bro. Not worth the effort to bring in the electronic stuff, especially bulky ones. recently, i opened an office in HCMC, went to Nguyen Kim to purchase some electrical stuff, bought a Hitachi 2000W new design vacum cleaner at only 2.35m VND, works out to be only S$144, around the same as Singapore. Bought 2 Acer laptops at 12.5 million VND each, same model and specs will cost around S$850 to S$950 in Singapore. Can you imagine if i buy from Singapore, have to bring onboard plane, then carry to customs, bribe them.... etc etc. Not worth it. Installed 2 cameras for my office at around 12 million VND, around S$736, which is cheaper than Singapore. Bought a genuine leather Made-In-Vietnam sofa set (2 + 2 big set) at only 12 million VND, looks nice and feels comfy. Their made-in-vietnam furniture has improved a lot thru the years and its much cheaper than in Singapore. So, if want buy furntiure and electronic stuffs, buy there. Times have changed, their tax rates are much lower now. Gone were the days when electronic stuffs were much cheaper in Singapore. So if any VB tell you buy in Singapore cheaper, its because if buy in Singapore, its free as you are paying .

Not only furniture. Made in Vietnam goods are now high quality stuff. Let you in on a trade secret. Some of those high class boutiques in Palais Renaissance which are selling outfits for thousands of dollars are actually made in Vietnam.

So dun say Vietnam no good, even the Vietnamese FLs quality have improved too.

Vietnamese goods vary in quality. More expensive ones are of course, better quality. But this may not apply to FL, more expensive ones may not be better ones
