The Housing Development Board is planning to build basements in some new HDB projects and are looking to use sunlight to reduce energy costs during the day.

HDB posted a request for proposal (RFP) on the government’s procurement website this month looking for private companies to develop innovating ways to reflect sunlight into basements so they could be built without very high energy costs.

The RFP outlined that that they want a solution that will half total energy costs and allow better light distribution than existing LED options.

The RFP also outlined that it will be giving more support to SMEs which are based in Singapore for the project and proposals but it is also open to any company.

It seems that HDB may soon be moving into underground living for Singaporeans.

Indeed, last year, National Development Minister Khaw Boon Wan hinted that new land rights might be made for underground space suggesting that Singapore may be moving towards doing even more underground development.

The government has also already made an inter-ministerial committee to study underground developments.

One current example of this is the plans for the new Punggol Northshore where basement carparks are going to be made under HDB blocks to improve land use efficiency.
