If TS doesn't want to accuse his SIL wrongly, why would he even bother trying to find out if his SIL is interested in him or not? I disagree that wanting it to happen is the only reason any guy would want to find out. He might want to find out sure, so that he can make sure it will never happen if it is true. E.g. avoid being in alone with her.

If its a false alarm, then he can stop suspecting and stop being awkward around her or stop avoiding her.

At the end of the day, if the BIL have no such thoughts, what makes you think that the SIL will? The fact that the BIL asked, means he must have certain thoughts about the SIL.
